MOLLY | CLASS OF 2017 {Rochester, NY Photographer}

So excited to finally get to share some of my favorites from Molly's session. I love that she was able to incorporate her father's car into this shoot and make her portraits unique. Best wishes as you soar into your senior year of High School. Enjoy these memories!

Sunflower Field

I love this field. I have been patiently waiting for the sunflowers to bloom and they are finally here!

Searching for Sea Glass

Emma is on the hunt for sea glass on Menemsha Beach in Martha's Vineyard. To be specific, she wants the blue pieces.  This is something we love to look for when we go on a beach vacation.   I love this little  series of pictures of her searching as she walks, sits and digs.

How to Photograph a Silhouette {Rochester, NY Photographer}

Creating a silhouette is fun and easy. It can convey moodiness, drama, emotion or mystery. These are one of my favorite things to photograph. The simplicity of it draws me in and makes me want to take more. Here is a quick tutorial on how I achieved this look.

  • Place your subject in front of the sky or lighter background.
  • if you are photographing a sunset like I did, you will want a larger depth of field. The higher the aperture the larger the DOF
  • Set your exposure based on the lightest area you are photographing . Make sure it is the lightest area of the sky but NOT the sun. You can use your camera meter reading as a starting point but you many have to play around with this a little bit. NOTE: the camera meter is not always correct. I generally use this a starting point to get the look I am trying to achieve.  Do not use a flash for a silhouette.
  • Place your focal point on the subject that you are shooting to get a nice sharp silhouette.
  • Snap away!

Choosing a subject that has a recognizable shape is key to holding viewers interest. If you are unable to see the details in the photo, it takes away from what emotion you are trying to evoke.

Let Summer Begin

Catch the action and freeze the moment! Turn your camera to manual and turn up that shutter speed. Action shots are lots of fun and so many opportunities with children. It took me awhile to master the exposure triangle but once you do, you will never go back to auto.

Anthony Class of 2016

Anthony Class of 2016

My favorite part about this session is that he did this photo shoot for his mother. Boys typically don't care if they get pictures done but how sweet that he made sure his mom had those special pictures in this moment in his life. I got thinking about what my son would do if I wasn't a photographer. I think he would do the exact same thing. Crazy how fast life goes and this kiddo is about to close this chapter in his life. Bittersweet I am sure!

Perfect morning for a family photoshoot.

Blogging For the First Time

Well, here I go, something I said I would never do! I am not very good at coming up with words to write so I thought I would use it more as a teaching tool or a way of storytelling through my photo sessions. I love showing my personal or client work and I think they love to see in online as well. So have fun reading as I blog away.
